Room preparation before getting started

Read these instructions completely before starting

Tools:

Before installing a wooden floor, you must prepare the subfloor. You will need a hammer and a pry bar, a concrete grinder, a Long level, a tape measure, cement leveling compound, a trowel, a bucket for mixing compound, a backsaw, a circular saw, a moisture test kit for concrete, and a pencil.

Installation steps of subfloor:

0.1    Use a concrete grinder to flatten and slightly roughen the surface. Clean the subfloor.

0.2    The flooring must be leveled with a variance of no more than 5mm every 3m. Use a tape measure and a long level to check your floor. Level where necessary with cement leveling. If there are any low spots fill them using cement leveling compound. Clean the subfloor and let the floor dry out completely.

0.3    Test the subfloor for excess moisture too. You can use a concrete moisture test kit for that. Just follow the manufacture instructions to make sure the moisture in your floor is within the manufactures recommended limits. Alternatively you can tape some plastic foil onto the subfloor and let it sit there for 5 days. If there is no condensation on the plastic foil facing the subfloor once you remove it, your floor can be considered dry.

Floating installation of floors

After the concrete subfloor is prepared, you can start your floating installation of floors. You need hardwood flooring, glue for tongue and groove, foam underlayment, a circular saw, a table saw, a dead blow hammer, a nylon tapping block, pry bar and pull bar, 8 mm spacers, a pencil and tape, hammer and screws.

Wood is, like we call it, a living material. Therefore, you should allow the flooring to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours. Before installation it's a good idea to mix the boards in order to get a good color pattern. Mix all the floor boards, not only one box.

Step 1: Install the first rows:

1.1    Lay the foam underlayment on the subfloor. Seal the joints between the separate sheets of subfloor with tape to avoid that moisture damages your floor.

1.2    Place the 8mm spacers against the wall.

1.3    Place the first floor board at the opposite side of the door against the spacers with the tongue facing inside the room. This board is your guideline for the rest of the room. It is very important that this floor board lies straight, even if the wall is not.

1.4    Once the installation of the first row is completed, there will be an extra piece from the last panel which - if big enough, due to aesthetic criteria - will be the first plank for the next row. In order to install this piece, apply glue along the entire top of the tongue of the first board. Also apply glue on the bottom of the groove of the second plank to be installed.

1.5    Fit the planks tightly together and wipe away any excess glue.

1.6    Continue this method until you have reached the last row. Use the dead blow hammer and the tapping block to gently but firmly push the groove of your floor boards into the tongue of the previous row.

Step 2: Install the last row:

2.1    When you're near the end of the room stop with the installation and make sure you can leave the room without walking on the boards.

2.2    Wait for about 24 hours and then finish the last few rows.

2.3    For the last row, you might have to trim the flooring in the width to make it fit. Measure the distance to the wall from the second last row. Do not measure from the tongue. To install the last row, fit the boards together using a pry bar and a piece of scrap wood against the wall to protect it.

2.4    Let the floor dry out for at least another 24 hours before you remove the spacers. You are now ready to install the moldings.

Guide to calculation

For example, your room measurements are as below:
                                             Width  :        5.40       m
                                             Length:        3.50       m
  Consumption pro m2 : 1.1

  Net volume: 5.40 x 3.50  = 18.90 m2

Volume needed: 18.90 x 1.1 = 20.79 m2
