Before getting started

Read these instructions completely before starting

Door elements:

Please check if you have a door, a door frame, door architraves, 3 hinges, a lock and a door handle. Furthermore it is important to know that these doors are reversible. This means that they can be used right opening as well as left opening. The hinges, the lock, the door frame as well as the door are especially designed for this.

During the installation you will also need montage glue, a glue pistol, PU montage foam (250 ml pro door), tape, a meter, a level, a few wedges, a saw, a cutter knife, a drilling machine and a pencil.

Check if the wall opening is +/-7 cm wider and 4 to 6 cm higher than the door leaf. This depends of the width of the chosen architraves. The opening between your frame and the wall will be covered by your architraves.

Secondly it is important to verify if the width of the door frame is wide enough for your walls. You can check this by measuring your walls on the top, in middle and at the bottom. The width of your frame needs to enlarge or equal to the highest value found. The found value is at the same time the width on which you need to trim your door frame. (width door frame)

Choose the position and direction of your door. Turning in or out of the room? Left or right? Everything is possible with this reversible smart door.

Installation of door frame in 3 simple steps

Step 1: Preparation of doorframe & door leaf:

1.1    Trim your doorframe (left, right and top piece) on the right width. (See remark above, width door frame)

1.2    Saw the top piece of the frame in the right length. Width door + 5 mm + 2x thickness door frame. In case your door leaf is 830 mm wide & your door frame is 15 mm thick then you need to trim your top frame on 865 mm.

1.3    Fix the hinge – Hinge part for frame = rounded parts – in the designated drillings in the frame. (See also important notes, fortification hinge drillings.)

1.4    Fix the lock plate in the designated drillings doorframe.

1.5    Screw the hinges – Part of the hinge for door leaf = square part – on the door leaf. This needs to be done leveled with the side of the door leaf.

Before fitting the door frame it is recommended to check if the hinge part of the door frame and door leaf fit.

Step 2: Fitting of doorframe & door in the wall opening:

2.1    Fix the upper part of the frame on the vertical legs of the frame with the 4 drill screws.

2.2    Fix the door frame with a wedge min. 1 mm above the ground into the door opening. The 1 mm play is necessary to avoid damage by water. Please ensure at the same time that 2 vertical legs of the door frame are level towards each other. This is important in case your floor is not level.

2.3    Please fix the doorframe temporarily in place in the door opening with the help of wedges. Do this between frame and wall at the upper left and right corner of the door opening.

2.4    Level the hinge jamb with the wall for vertically as well as horizontally and fix the position temporarily with wedges.

2.5    Please hinge the door leaf into the frame once you have fixed the position of the hinge jamb.

2.6    Level now the lock jamb with the wall vertically as well as horizontally and lock it in place with wedges.

2.7    Open the door leaf several times to ensure that there is enough play around the door leaf (2.5 mm both sides). Adjust if necessary.

2.8    Permanently fixing the door frame can be done in 2 ways:

Option 1:   Fix the doorframe permanently with PU foam: Apply a limited amount of montage foam between the wall and the doorframe.

Option 2:    Fix the doorframe with distance screws. (Advice for heavy doors): Drill holes at the level of the hinges in the doorstopper groove through the frame and into the wall. Screw the distance screws with a plug to fix the frame. Apply a limited amount of montage foam between the wall and the doorframe.

2.9    Drying time +/- 60 min. Remove surplus of foam with a knife. Attention: only fill up the open joints partially. The foam expands after application.

Step 3: Final fitting door:

3.1    Place the 2 vertical doorstopper in the designated groove with montage glue and fix them temporarily in place with painter's tape until the doorstoppers are firmly attached to the frame (+/- 25 min.). Make sure to position the 2 vertical door stoppers also 1 mm above the ground to avoid damage by moisture. Trim the horizontal doorstopper at the required length and fix it between the 2 vertical doorstoppers in the doorstopper groove of the top jamb.

3.2    Adjust the architraves to the length and the width of your doorframe. All depending on your choice of architraves it might be required to saw the architrave miter.

Attention: You need to fix the architraves on to the doorframe at the door side 8 mm removed from the inner edge of the doorframe. This will avoid that the lock damages your architraves. The architraves at the other side need to be positioned level with the inner edge of the doorframe to cover the bare side of the frame in case this has been trimmed. This of course will also influence the length of your architraves.

3.3    Apply montage glue at the outer edge of the frame. Place the architraves 8 mm removed from the inner edge of the frame at the door side. At the other side you position the architrave leveled with the inner edge of the frame. Architraves should be fixed temporarily in place until fully attached to the frame (+/-25 min.). Position also the architraves 1 mm above the ground to avoid damage by moist.

3.4    Position the lever in your reversible lock in the required position and fix it into the door leaf with the supplied screws.

3.5    Install the handle.

3.6    Apply some montage glue between the 1 mm play between the frame, the architraves, the doorstoppers and the floor to avoid damage by water.

Finishing of primed doors

In case you have chosen for a primed smart door than it is necessary to treat them with a covering paint.

Before finishing your door it is necessary to sand, clean and degrease your door.

Secondly you completely treat the door and all its elements 3x.

Between every treatment you allow the paint to dry and sand it slightly before applying the next layer. (Grain 240).

Important notes

Before installation you need to verify if your home is dry enough. Doors should only be installed when the wall moisture is equal or below 10%.

What about the new isolation guide lines? These guidelines impose certain rules on the air circulation between the different living areas.  To address this you can trim you door 6 mm at the bottom.  By doing this you will have a play of 10 mm.

You can fortify your hinge drillings by using waste from your doorframe.  Saw 3 cubes of 3 cm by 8 cm from your doorframe waste.  Glue those at the back of your doorframe, leveled with the front of your doorframe and hinge drilling.  Further when fixing the hinge you screw through the frame and the fortification cubes.

These doors are only suitable for internal use.

Stock these doors dry and horizontal before installation.

Treat your doors with care after removing the package to avoid that those get damage.

In case trimming the doors is necessary, you need to do this at the bottom of the door only.  It is prohibited to trim more than 10 mm in order to safeguard the stability and the proportions of the door.  Attention: in case this happens you will have to adjust your frame accordingly (also at the bottom).

When your smart door comes with glass then the acceptance criteria of the VGI apply (www.vgi-fiv.be).
